Stilbaai - A Gem Among Gems

Because of its location and beauty, Stilbaai is a greatly cherished gem among Hessequa’s jewels. Being the nearest bay to Riversdale at the foot of the Sleeping Beauty mountain peak, local people sometimes fondly refer to Stilbaai as the Bay of the Sleeping Beauty.

The Stilbaai area boasts a rich history, evidence of which was found dating as far back as the Middle Stone Age (between 70 – 75 000 years ago). Evidence of a much later period was also left behind for us to visit, peruse, and marvel at. Would you believe that around a mere two hundred years ago wild elephants were freely roaming these parts?

Roundabout the turn of the 19th century, inland residents living close by started coming to this bay for a holiday. Slowly a camping site became a little village, and in turn the little village grew into the town we know today. A popular holiday destination inviting everyone, young and old, local as well as international to its various blue flag beaches.
